12mm Shuttering Plywood 8x4 Price in India: Complete Buying Guide

Across most Indian markets, the 12mm shuttering plywood 8x4 price generally falls somewhere in the ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 range per sheet, though it shifts quite a bit depending on the resin grade, the core wood, and whether the sheet carries genuine IS: 4990 certification. Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru broadly sit within this band, but yard-to-yard variation is common enough that it's worth getting a few quotes before you settle.

Contractors buying in bulk for a large formwork job usually manage to negotiate a bit off the retail rate, while a one-off purchase for a small residential slab tends to land closer to the higher end.

What decides how much you pay for a sheet of 12mm shuttering plywood?

Several things push the 12mm shuttering plywood 8x4 price up or down at the yard. The resin used for bonding matters most. Boards bonded with phenol formaldehyde resin under a high-tonnage hot press cost more than lighter, urea-bonded sheets, but they also survive far more pours before the face starts flaking.

Core wood plays a part too. Hardwood cores from species like gurjan or eucalyptus carry a premium over mixed or softwood cores because they hold screws better and resist warping under wet concrete load. Weight is a rough proxy for quality here, since a genuine 30 kg sheet has denser veneers than a 24 kg sheet sold at the same thickness.

Add the film-face coating, edge sealing, freight from the mill, and the 18% GST charged under HSN code 4412 (the tax classification code used for plywood billing in India), and two sheets that look identical on a price list can differ by ₹15 to ₹20 per square foot once all of this is accounted for.

What exactly is 12mm shuttering plywood used for?

Shuttering plywood, also called formwork or centering plywood, is a phenolic-resin-bonded board pressed specifically to mould wet concrete until it sets. It differs from regular plywood in three ways: a mirror-finish film face that leaves a smooth cast surface, edges sealed against water ingress, and a bonding strength rated to survive repeated wetting and drying without delaminating.

In India, this category is governed by IS: 4990, the Bureau of Indian Standards specification for plywood used in concrete shuttering work, which sets out testing requirements for bending strength, water resistance and preservative treatment. Manufacturers selling under this grade must hold a valid BIS licence under the current Quality Control Order for plywood.

How does 12mm compare with other shuttering plywood thicknesses?

    Thickness

    Typical weight

    Best suited for

    Approximate reuse count

    9mm

    30 kg

    Light residential slabs, boundary walls

    8 to 10 pours

    12mm

    34 kg

    Columns, beams, mid-rise slabs

    12 to 15 pours

    18mm

    38 kg

    High-rise formwork, heavy repeated use

    20 or more pours

12mm sits in the middle of this range, which is why it's the thickness most site engineers reach for on ordinary RCC work. It's rigid enough to hold its shape under a beam or column pour, yet light enough for two labourers to carry and reposition without a crane.

What should you check before finalising a 12mm shuttering plywood 8x4 price with a dealer?

Look for the ISI mark stamped on the edge, ask for the actual sheet weight rather than trusting the catalogue figure, and run a moisture check if you're buying ahead of a monsoon-season pour. Confirm the GST is shown separately on the invoice, and ask how many pours the supplier's own tests suggest the board can withstand. A dealer who answers that with a specific number, rather than a vague "many times," is usually one who actually tests their stock.

Saburi Ply manufactures its Shuttering Plywood under the IS: 4990 structural grade, pressed on a high-tonnage hot press with a mirror-finish film face built for repeated concrete pours. You can review the full Saburi Shine Platinum specification before placing an order.

    Frequently asked questions

Is 12mm or 18mm shuttering plywood better for residential construction? For ordinary residential slabs, columns and beams, 12mm is usually sufficient and more economical. 18mm earns its extra cost only on high-rise projects or formwork reused dozens of times.

How many times can 12mm shuttering plywood be reused? A well-maintained, genuine IS: 4990 sheet typically survives 12 to 15 pours before the face finish starts to wear, provided it's cleaned and stacked flat between uses.

Is GST included in the 12mm shuttering plywood 8x4 price quoted by dealers? Not always. Many yard quotes are given exclusive of the 18% GST charged under HSN 4412, so always ask for a GST-inclusive figure before comparing suppliers.

What is the difference between BWP and MR grade shuttering plywood? BWP (Boiling Water Proof) grade is bonded with phenol formaldehyde resin and withstands prolonged water exposure, while MR (Moisture Resistant) grade tolerates only occasional dampness. Shuttering work should always use BWP or an equivalent structural grade.

Does 12mm shuttering plywood need a BIS certification mark?

Yes, and it's not optional anymore. The government's Quality Control Order requires every plywood manufacturer to hold a BIS licence and stamp the ISI mark on the sheet before it can legally be sold. If a dealer can't show you that mark, that's your cue to walk away, whatever the price sounds like.

How much does a full 8x4 sheet of 12mm shuttering plywood weigh?

Pick one up and it should feel like 30 to 34 kg. If it's noticeably lighter than that, the core is probably thinner than advertised, or the veneers are cheaper than what you're paying for. Either way, that's a sheet worth weighing before you pay for it, not after.
